Double Up!

"Everyone" complains there is not enough time for this, that, or the other. There's not enough time to teach all the standards, there's not enough time to learn technology. I find there is time if one makes the time. That which is important will take precedence. My elementary teacher online learners say they don't have enough time to teach science and social studies. I say, teach it during reading and math! What is wrong with doubling up?

We must find a way to include all the important things in all aspects of our lives. It can be done, but wasting time and energy with a complaint only eats the time that could be used for important tasks.

When a teacher uses reading time to teach science, the importance of learning to read is reinforced! Use those nonfiction trade books to teach animal and plant adaptations, how tsunamis occur, weather phenomena, calculate speed, measurement, the relevance of cultural differences, geography, or how governments began. A trade book is so much more focused than a text book and far less scary to a young student. Perhaps a life-long habit would be built by reading trade books when the student is young. I read trade books (professional books) quite often. A doctor reads trade books often. All professionals must keep up with the latest research in their field. I say to all teachers, double up!
